Pet Surgery at Charm City Veterinary Hospital

At Charm City Veterinary Hospital, your pet’s safety, comfort, and well-being are our top priorities—especially when it comes to surgery. Whether your pet is undergoing a routine procedure or a more complex operation, we take every precaution to ensure a safe and smooth experience from start to finish.

Pre-Surgical Evaluation & Safety

Before any surgical procedure, your pet receives a comprehensive pre-surgical assessment, including a physical exam and pre-anesthetic blood work. These screenings help us identify any underlying conditions that could affect anesthesia or surgery and allow us to tailor a personalized anesthetic protocol for your pet’s specific needs.

In nearly all procedures, an IV catheter will be placed to allow immediate access to the bloodstream. This is critical for administering fluids, medications, and—if necessary—life-saving drugs quickly and effectively.

Sterile Technique & Intraoperative Monitoring

Your pet’s safety doesn’t stop with preparation. During surgery, we use advanced sterilization techniques to reduce the risk of infection, and your pet is monitored closely by a dedicated, trained veterinary technician. This technician monitors vital parameters in real time every few minutes, including:

  • Blood pressure
  • Heart rate and rhythm
  • Respiratory rate
  • Oxygen saturation
  • Body temperature

This constant monitoring helps us ensure your pet remains stable and comfortable throughout the procedure.

Comprehensive Pain Management

Pain management is a top priority at every stage of your pet’s surgical experience. We use preemptive pain control, meaning we begin pain medications before the procedure even starts. This continues with intraoperative pain relief and extends into a customized post-operative pain management plan, so your pet is as comfortable as possible during recovery. Anti-nausea medication/s are also used to minimize post-operative discomfort.

Trusted Surgical Referrals When Needed

When we are unequipped to handle your pet’s care, we will kindly refer you to the right surgeon to ensure your pet receives the very best care. While we perform a wide variety of procedures in-house, there are times when more complex surgeries, some cancers, or orthopedic needs require the expertise of a specialist. We are fortunate to have access to several board-certified veterinary surgeons in the Baltimore area with whom we work closely to ensure seamless referrals and continuity of care. Our veterinarians will always work with you to find the best care for your pet, even if that isn’t with us.

Post-Operative Care & Follow-Up

Recovery doesn’t end when the surgery is over. Our team provides detailed care instructions, day after check-ins and will remain available for any questions or concerns. We work with you to monitor healing, manage pain, and ensure your pet is recovering as expected.
