Quality of Life Concerns

The CCVH Team Will Walk with You Through One of Life’s Hardest Goodbyes.

What are Quality-of-Life Services?

At Charm City Veterinary Hospital, we understand that one of the hardest parts of loving an animal is knowing when it’s time to say goodbye. Our pets are family, and the decision to help them cross the Rainbow Bridge is never simple. It’s emotional, deeply personal, and different for every family.

Our Quality-of-Life Services are more than just humane euthanasia. We offer many other resources, tools and services that are designed not just to guide you through the medical aspects, but to walk beside you emotionally and bring your pet comfort. Our services are tailored to help you find clarity and peace, while feeling supported every step of the way.

Find Perspective in Difficult Moments

When you’re facing uncertainty about your pet’s comfort or happiness, it can help to have tools that bring a little more objectivity to an emotional process. Two of the most meaningful resources we share with families come from Lap of Love, a nationally recognized leader in hospice and end-of-life veterinary care.

1. The Lap of Love Quality of Life Scale

This thoughtful questionnaire helps you assess your pet’s daily well-being by looking at factors such as pain levels, appetite, mobility, and joy. It’s a compassionate way to translate what your heart is feeling into a more tangible perspective, allowing your family to discuss your pet’s comfort openly and without guilt.

2. The Lap of Love Quality of Life Calendar & Daily Assessment Chart

Simple but powerful, this visual tool helps you track your pet’s good and bad days. A smile or check mark might represent a good day, while an X or frown could represent a difficult one. Over time, this gives you a clearer picture to help you see whether your pet is having more good days than bad. Sometimes, this clarity can bring peace to a decision that otherwise feels impossible to make.

Lap of Love Support Groups and Counseling

Lap of Love offers free virtual sessions and optional family counseling (starting around $50) to help guide you both before and after saying goodbye.

Pet Grief Support Hotline

Available by phone at 1-844-472-9588 if you prefer to talk one-on-one with someone who understands. Because love and loss are intertwined — and both deserve compassion.

Helping Children Process Grief

Young children may have a hard time conveying how they feel when it comes to a sick pet or one that has recently passed away. The experts at The Center for Loss and Life Transition have created an activity and coloring book that we offer for free to parents with young children. The goal of this book is to help you connect with your child during a difficult time.

End-of-Life and Hospice Care

Hospice Support

From sharing resources that offer hospice care for pets to assisting with care and training you on how to perform select treatments at home — our team is here to guide you as you care for your pet in their last days.

Humane Euthanasia

We offer free sedation to all humane euthanasia patients so that they remain comfortable and pain-free until the end. This process is never rushed. You may take as much or as little time as you need to say goodbye. The decision to stay with your pet until the end or to leave post-sedation is entirely up to your family. Our team will support and guide you through the process, answer your questions, and remain by your side until the very end.

Honoring Your Pet’s Memory

When that time comes for your pet to cross the Rainbow Bridge, we take great care in helping you honor your companion’s memory. Our cremation and memorial options can include a framed keepsake under archival glass, featuring your choice of a paw or nose print, a soft fur clipping, and a personalized gold nameplate. You will have the option to opt out of this keepsake or purchase additional keepsakes if you choose to.

We offer both communal and private cremation options. Each urn and keepsake piece is crafted with the intention to celebrate the life and bond you shared. Our catalog of keepsake items reflects our commitment to quality, because there’s nothing more important in these moments than preserving your pet’s legacy.

What Families Say About Their Experience

“From the moment I arrived, every single team member I encountered was genuinely welcoming, professional, and remarkably attentive. It wasn’t just standard good service; they consistently went above and beyond to make sure that each patient, animal and human alike, was incredibly well taken care of.”

“The staff was always so caring and kind. They showed our pups so much love and I always enjoyed seeing them at our appointments. Special shoutout to Shelia, Leah and KB!”

“Both of our dogs crossed the Rainbow Bridge in the last few months, and I just want to thank everyone at Charm City Vet for so many years of wonderful service.”

“They are truly empathetic. They took very good care of my dog on his last day, until he crossed the Rainbow Bridge.”

These stories remind us why we do what we do. While this is the hardest part of our job and each pet leaves a paw print forever indented on our heart, we offer these services because the pets we love deserve dignity, you deserve to not feel alone in this difficult time, and every goodbye deserves to be wrapped in love.
